Researchers are studying a possible link between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and a higher accident risk.
Some medical conditions have been shown to be linked to a higher risk of traffic accidents, such as sleep apnea. Researchers are studying a possible link between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and a higher accident risk. Until now, ADHD was never associated with an increased accident risk, but a new Swedish study has suggested that this condition cannot be overlooked.
Car Accidents and ADHD
Between 2006 and 2010, research was conducted by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden in which 17,000 car accident victims with ADHD were examined. Car accident victims who did not have ADHD were also examined during the same time period. The study found that adult drivers with ADHD were more likely to be involved in traffic crashes compared to drivers who did not have ADHD.
The research found that 6.5 percent of male drivers and 4 percent of female drivers with ADHD were involved in at least one accident compared to 2 percent of the subjects who did not have ADHD. Researchers also found that male drivers with the condition who were taking ADHD medication were 30 percent less likely to get into a serious crash compared to ADHD patients who did not take medication. On the other hand, female drivers with ADHD did not seem to be affected by medication as far as their crash risk was concerned. Overall, drivers taking ADHD medication were found to reduce their risk of a crash by 58 percent.
Researchers suggested that ADHD patients may be at a higher risk of a traffic collision because the condition can cause distractions and difficulty focusing. The researchers also clarified that the scope of their study did not allow them to determine who was at fault in the traffic accidents they studied. It is possible that patients with ADHD may have less ability to avoid crashes caused by other drivers.
Reducing Car Accident Risk
It was found that medication may help patients control symptoms of ADHD and avoid accidents. However, it is also important to take into account potential side effects of medication and discuss what implications it could have on road safety. In fact, when taking any new medication, discuss possible side effects and road safety with a doctor; some drugs have been shown to induce drowsiness and other side effects that can significantly impair driving abilities.
