Pokemon Go, a new video game app, has become an overnight sensation.
Pokemon Go is a game that is downloaded to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Players can then collect characters and battle with other players. The Pokemon Go app accesses a player’s geolocation to find out when they are near a PokeStop. Players are required to walk through these PokeStops in order to advance through the game.
A New Distraction
The game has generated massive interest among young people and adults alike. However, some players have started to use the game in ways that can be very dangerous. For example, players are driving through the checkpoints rather than walking through them. The checkpoints require players to travel at low speeds, and at the same time, navigate the app. Drivers have been observed stopping in the middle of the road to find checkpoint locations. Players who drive through these checkpoints are not paying adequate attention to the roadway and traffic.
Accidents Caused by Distracted Drivers
Considering the fact that distracted driving has already reached epidemic proportions in the U.S., the last thing that was needed was another distraction. Some state governments have released a request for drivers to stop playing Pokemon Go while driving because it is becoming a huge problem for law enforcement officials. There have been several accidents already:
- In New York, a man was driving while playing Pokemon Go when he got distracted. He drove off the road and crashed into a tree. The man sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
- Two Canadian police officers were injured when two persons backed into their police vehicle. The two persons reportedly got out of their car and admitted that they were playing Pokemon Go.
- A 15-year-old girl in Pennsylvania was hit by a car while walking on a busy highway while she was playing on her cell phone and did not pay attention to the oncoming traffic. She suffered serious injuries.
Many of the Pokemon Go checkpoints are located in streets and traffic tunnels. Pokemon Go is a distraction to both pedestrians and drivers. You can find pedestrians walking the streets while looking at their cell phones. This app has come as another serious distractions for pedestrians. It is important to drive safely and avoid all distractions such as apps and games.
