Today was an emotional day for this personal injury lawyer. I have a client who suffered a leg amputation after being in a motorcycle accident.
He was hit by another vehicle and as happens far too often in motorcycle accidents, his life was permanently changed for the worse.
Today I went and visited with my client and his family. We had some paperwork to complete for his lawsuit and though he was willing to come to my downtown office, making a house call was one of my ways for saying thanks for the confidence he showed in my firm by hiring us.
I was greeted at the front door by his wife. She was very thankful that I was willing to pay them a personal visit. It wasn’t long into our visit that she teared up. After all, though her husband is the one who suffered the amputation, it cannot be denied that she is suffering as well. Her husband went from being a happy, healthy, gainfully employed, middle-aged man to a person who has already gone through six surgeries, including both a below-the-knee amputation and an above-the-knee amputation. Though he was recently fitted with a prosthetic, he has been unable to work for the past several months. All of this has put quite the emotional and financial strain on him and his family.
In addition to taking care of the work we had to accomplish, I got to know the family on a personal level. I try to do this with most of my clients. I find that when I get to know them on a personal level, I become a better lawyer on their behalves.
Today was emotional for me for several reasons. Obviously it was an emotional for me because I got to see firsthand what someone’s negligence can do to not only an individual, but to an entire family. It was also emotional because I feel truly blessed that out of all the personal injury attorneys out there, this family trusted me to handle the legal aspects of their motorcycle accident case. Their confidence in my law firm means a great deal to me and I will work my hardest to achieve justice for them.
